श्री विष्णु जी ने देवकी और वसुदेव जी की आठवीं सन्तान के रूप में कंस के कारागार, में जन्म लिया।

कंस के डर से वासुदेव जी ने काली अंधियारी रात में ही यमुना पार गोकुल में नन्द बाबा और यशोदा जी के घर पहुॅचा दिया।

गोकुल में कृष्ण जी ने अनेकों मनोहारी बाल लीलाएं की, और आगे जाकर अधर्मी कंस का वध कर के अपने माता पिता को कारागार से मुक्ति दिलाई।

महाभारत के युद्ध में भी श्री कृष्ण जी की महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका थी, अर्जुन के रथ के सारथी बन कर उन्होंने अर्जुन को भगवद्गीता का उपदेश दिया, जो आज सारे संसार में विख्यात है, और के युग में इसका बहुत महत्व है।

श्री कृष्ण के अनेक रूपों मे एक रूप योगीराज कृष्ण का भी है। इसलिए इन्हें योगीराज कृष्ण भी कहते हैं। अष्टमी तिथि को जन्म लेने के कारण ही कृष्ण जन्माष्टमी मनाई जाती है
